The EU Gender Equality Strategy urges educators to teach children about gender sensitivity, non-discrimination, combatting stereotypes, valuing gender identity, and promoting self-esteem and conflict resolution from an early age.
In our multicultural society, discrimination and gender-based violence are prevalent, particularly in educational settings. Stereotypes, often unconsciously perpetuated by teachers and educational materials, impact students’ understanding and acceptance of society. Discrimination takes various forms, affecting well-being and life prospects, leading to issues like school dropout. According to the European Institute for Gender Equality, 11.1% of 18-24-year-olds leave education early, with significant gender disparities.
Young people need skills to thrive as active citizens. While academic success matters, non-cognitive competencies are often more crucial for life success. Social-emotional learning helps adolescents develop self-awareness, academic achievement, and positive behaviors. The CLOSE project aligns with these principles by using cinema to empower teachers and students. It strengthens social, emotional and life skills, equipping students to be tolerant and responsible citizens.
